Iraqi Artist Salah Al-Qasab Dies After a Long Battle with Illness

The Iraqi Artists Syndicate announced the death of Iraqi director and theater researcher Dr. Salah Al-Qasab at the age of 81, following a period of illness. His passing marks the loss of one of the most prominent figures who left a clear mark on Iraqi and Arab theater.

The syndicate offered its condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues, expressing its sadness over his passing and wishing his loved ones patience and strength.

Born in Baghdad in 1945, Salah Al-Qasab graduated from the College of Fine Arts in Baghdad before pursuing higher studies in theater directing in Romania. He later worked as a professor of directing at the College of Fine Arts in Baghdad, while also pursuing a career in directing, research, writing, and theater theory.

Al-Qasab became particularly known for his work in “Image Theater,” of which he was one of the leading figures in Iraq and the Arab world. He began developing this approach through his production of “Hamlet,” presented at the College of Fine Arts in Baghdad in 1980 after being introduced to this form of theater during his studies in Romania. He not only brought the concept to the stage but also worked on developing its theoretical foundations and ideas.

Throughout his career, Al-Qasab directed a number of productions based on works by major playwrights, including William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” “King Lear,” “The Tempest,” and “Macbeth,” as well as works by Anton Chekhov, including “Uncle Vanya,” “Three Sisters,” and “The Seagull.” He also presented other productions such as “Isolation in Crystal,” “The Diamond Party,” “The Light Dream,” and “The Babylonian Creation.”

His contribution extended beyond directing. He authored a number of studies and books addressing directing, scenography, and the concept of image in theater. Among his notable works is “Image Theater: Theory and Practice,” along with a collection of essays and studies exploring the development of his theatrical approach and the aesthetic and philosophical ideas behind “Image Theater.”

In his productions, Al-Qasab also relied on a range of visual and physical elements, including the body, space, light, color, and scenography. His aim was to create theatrical performances that did not depend solely on storytelling, but instead gave the image, symbolism, and suggestion a central role in conveying meaning. This approach made his work a subject of interest and study among theater artists and critics in Iraq and across the Arab world.

With the passing of Salah Al-Qasab, Iraqi theater has lost one of its most prominent directors and innovators, whose work was closely associated with experimentation and the search for a different theatrical language. Over several decades, his “Image Theater” project remained a defining part of his career, extending beyond Iraq and becoming an important chapter in the development of modern Arab theater.
